If you’re looking for another outdoor activity to do while staying socially distant, consider disc golf (or frisbee golf as I used to call it)! I would say this is more for older kids and adults since it takes some coordination and strength to throw a disc, but it’s a great way to get a little competitive outdoors!

Disc golf is a sport in which players throw a frisbee-like disc at a target, and the rules are similar to golf. It is usually played on a course of 9 or 18 holes. Players complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target, and they continue throwing until the disc lands in the net. Usually, the number of throws a player uses to reach each target are tallied (often in relation to par), and players seek to complete each hole in the lowest number of total throws.

We have a few disc golf courses available around Raleigh as you can see from the list below. In order to reduce damage to the course, please note that Disc Golf courses are closed during and after rain events.

Cedar Hills Park

Buckhorn Disc Golf Course at Harris Lake County Park

2112 County Park Dr, New Hill, NC 27562

This course is located off the Disc Golf/Fishing Pond gravel parking lot, which is the third road on your right. Signs are posted at the cable entrance to the disc golf access area.

The course offers 18 challenging baskets, including water hazards and narrow fairways. There are also two additional practice baskets located at the beginning of the course to help you warm up your short or long distance throws. Scorecards are available and found inside the mailbox near the tee pads at basket #1. The disc golf course closes 15 minutes before the park closes.

Middle Creek Disc Golf Course

4052 Optimist Farm Rd, Apex, NC 27539

Designed with assistance from PDGA Hall-of-Famer Carlton Howard, the 18-hole Middle Creek Disc Golf course takes full advantage of the park’s topography and vegetative features to provide a variety of unique challenges for players of all abilities. Wide-open fairway shots, mounded basket locations, elevated tees and narrow woodland fairways feature prominently. Concrete tee pads are utilized on most holes. Disc catcher pro targets complete the package.

Kentwood Park

Diavolo At New Hope

2584 New Hope Church Rd., Cary, NC 27519

Just recently opened in October 2020, the original scope included 30 pro and amateur tee pads for the 22-hole course. But due to careful budget management, it was expanded to include the remaining 36 of a total planned 58 tee pads, so all skill levels can play this course!

Zebulon Community Park

Zebulon Community Park is home to an 18 hole par 3 disc golf course. New in 2020 they also installed a foot golf course.

The 9-hole disc golf course on Centennial Campus near Lake Raleigh is a challenging, rustic course, designed by Lynn Swank and Rob Yaeger. It is available free of charge for NC State students, faculty and staff.

Valley Springs Park in Durham

Valley Springs offers 22 holes of disc golf and 3 course layouts, each with its own personality and challenges. The course plays through a scenic hardwood forest featuring moderate elevation changes.

Forest Ridge Park

Enjoy the seasonal 9-hole disc golf course when open October through mid-March during regular park hours. The first tee box is located just south of the main parking lot.
