I love creative activities, either with the kids or a group of friends! I’ve painted pottery a couple of times when visiting out of town family and friends, so I was excited to hear that we have our very own paint-your-own-pottery place right here in Raleigh!

Inside of Klaystation Paint-your-own-pottery studio

Klaystation is a pottery painting studio and party place in Falls River. In the studio you can glaze paint a pre-made piece of pottery. It will then need to be fired in the kiln at 1730 degrees, so the studio will let you know when it’s ready for pickup!

During the pandemic they are also offering pottery-2-go orders where you can pick up your own kit to be painted at home! They offer curbside pick-up as well as Home Delivery within 10 miles of the studio. In the next few weeks they will also be adding the option of wood pieces to paint at home and laser engraving!

Pottery-2-go

As a part of the pottery-2-go program, we received two mystery mini-figure kits. This kit usually comes with acrylic paint, but we also tried out some glaze to see how the finished piece turns out.

The mini-figure kit was PERFECT for my three kids since they each got their own figure to decorate! I was super impressed that the kit came with everything we needed, including paint brushes, protective paper to lay down, plates to mix our paint, and q-tips and toothpicks for detail work. They seriously thought of EVERYTHING!

If you’re looking for a simple art project then the acrylic paint is what you want. The kids can mix the colors and paint any way they want to. But if you’re going for an authentic pottery look then you might want to try glaze. Also, food items like mugs, bowls, and plates must be painted with glaze. It’s a more in depth process that takes some driving back and forth to the studio, but it’s worth it!

Heads up, the acrylic paint looks a lot more vibrant after it dries. The glaze will look light and chalky as you see below, until it is completely finished in the kiln.

If you choose glaze paint, once you are done painting you will need to bring everything back to Klaystation so they can finish it up for you. They will let you know when it’s done and you can come pick up your finished piece! This can take 7-10 business days, but they are doing their best to get it done as fast as possible for you! It only took 3 business days for them to let me know mine was ready, although it then took me another couple days to actually get over there to pick it up! As you can see in the picture below, the finished product is glossy in appearance and the colors are much more vibrant!

The Studio

During normal business operations (you know, NOT during a nationwide pandemic), you can drop in at any time and paint inside the studio. If pottery isn’t your thing they also have wooden pieces available, such as bird houses, pallets, and canvases.

They have a party room available to host birthday parties or girls nights out. If you need childcare during track out or summer break they also have camps available! And the basic pottery wheel throwing class is on my list of new things to try! I’ve added it to our date night directory as a great idea to do with the hubby!
