Smith Creek Soccer Park is obviously meant for soccer games, as the name implies. However, we’ve found some great use for the open fields and greenway trails during the pandemic! Plus there’s a little free library nearby, and a small playground once it reopens.

Soccer Fields

The main attraction at Smith Creek Soccer Park is obviously the three soccer fields. Usually this is a major hub for soccer games in Wake Forest. We’ve been before on a weekend and every field is packed with players and their families.

However, now that soccer is cancelled for the forseeable future, the fields have become a great open space to do whatever you want! Most people we saw were practicing drills or kicking around a soccer ball. But we also saw some guys lifting weights, running, and practicing marching band drills. There was plenty of space for everyone to socially distance!

I forgot any sort of toys for the kids, so they just enjoyed running through the fields. It was pretty windy in the open, so next time I’ll bring some balls, frisbees, and definitely a kite!

Greenway

The Smith Creek Greenway runs right through the park and connects to other trails, so you can spend some time exploring Wake Forest. We did a quick stroll down to one of the Heritage neighborhoods and then headed back. As we were walking, we stumbled upon a Little Free Library, which added to my kids excitement of this park tremendously!

We passed lots of bikers on our walk, so keep an eye on your small kids. Mine still haven’t learned trail etiquette so they tend to get in the bikers way.

At the beginning of the trail you’ll also find some outdoor fitness equipment. This can boost your workout, or in my case, just entertain the kids!

Playground

The playground at Smith Creek Soccer Park isn’t much to write home about. The main focus of this park is obviously the soccer field, but this is a great spot to let your kid roam free between soccer games.

The playground has a mulch surface and one bench for parent seating. It is not fenced in and is in direct sun and can get hot, so don’t forget sunscreen!

While you’re in the neighborhood, swing by Dairy Depot for a fun a treat after your walk!
