We previously posted about the Home Depot Kids Workshops that are super popular with kids in the area. Now Lowe’s Home Improvement is trying to compete and they have started their own free DIY kids workshops on the second Saturday of the month from 9am-11am. Now you have two weekends a month where your kids can try out their woodworking skills in a fun, safe, environment!

How does it compare to the Home Depot Workshops?

My husband actually took the kids without me (Hello Saturday morning to myself! 🙌) but he took these pictures and gave me all the details. We are regulars at the Home Depot workshops so we couldn’t help but compare. Here are a few of the differences my husband noticed:

🔨 In addition to aprons, the kids also get goggles that they get to keep (yay for eye safety!)

their aprons and instruction book, which doubles as an activity book!

🔨It was WAY less crowded than the Home Depot workshops. My husband and kids pretty much had the place to themselves!

🔨No seating was provided, just a table to work on while you stand.

🔨The instructions were much easier to follow and understand. It also doubles as an activity book since there were some fun crosswords and other games on the back.

🔨The quality of the wood was much better than at Home Depot. The wood was thicker and the finished product felt much more sturdy.

🔨There was no painting during our workshop, so I’m not sure if that was just for this project or if they never offer paint. The red part of their project came pre-painted in the kit, so I’m guessing that’s the norm. That might be a huge plus for some parents, but my kids really loved the painting part so I’m sad it wasn’t an option.

🔨 Instead of a commemorative pin, your child will receive a patch that can be ironed onto their apron. I dislike that this takes a bit of effort from mom, but we’ve had issues with the pins falling off and getting lost, so I’m hoping these stay attached better!

We highly recommend it!

Overall, Lowe’s kids workshops are a great weekend outing so I definitely recommend them! I love that the kids are learning new skills like using a hammer and screwdriver. I also prefer a lot of the differences that make these Lowe’s workshops different from Home Depot. And less crowded is always a plus for me!

Make sure you register in advance at your nearest Lowe’s so they have enough supplies! We have added these to our Raleigh Tot Spot calendar, so be sure to check it out!
