Lions Park is one of the largest metro parks in Raleigh, but it’s most standout feature is the giant BMX course available to the public. If you like watching bicycle motocross races, try watching a Capital City BMX meet at Lions Park on Sundays all throughout the year!

Capital City BMX

Capital City BMX is officially sanctioned as a USA BMX track by the American Bicycle Association. Those who are interested in racing can participate in one trial race, after which they must purchase a membership from USA BMX to continue racing. Spectators are always free, and it could be a fun outing for the kids to watch all of the action take place!

We visited right after a big rain storm so the tracks were covered to prevent them from getting damaged. The tracks close during inclement weather, so we weren’t able to see any racing. Looking at the schedule, practices happen on Thursday evenings and races are on Sundays. So if you are interested in seeing some action you’ll want to visit at those times.

BMX racing at Lions Park is open to anyone who can ride a bike and no experience is necessary. Bring your own bike, but keep in mind there are a few safety modifications that must be done. The racing season lasts all year long, so it’s a sport you or your child can enjoy around your busy schedules.

Right outside of the BMX track are a few tables if you need to pack a picnic for the day.

Community Center and Playground

Onsite is the Lions Park Community Center, which features free after school programming for kids, plus a gym and fitness room that you can join for a monthly fee.

The playground is separated into two sections, one for older kids and one for the younger ones. It has a rubberized surface and is partially shaded. There’s a large picnic shelter adjacent to the playground, which would make this place perfect for a BMX birthday party!

Tennis Courts

Next to the BMX course are 4 tennis courts open for play. During our visit we spent most of our time running around the tennis courts and even found a few balls lying around!

Basketball Court

Lions Park also has a couple basketball courts available for the public. Grab your friends and a basketball and play a quick pickup game!

Baseball Field

Right at the entrance of the park are the baseball fields. I’m not sure what teams play here, but I’m sure it’s popular during the season!
